Switching Jobs: How I Negotiated 3x My Old Salary
Moving from a startup to a big company and getting paid what I was actually worth.
I made ₹12 LPA at a startup.
I was offered ₹18 LPA at a big tech company.
I negotiated to ₹35 LPA.
Here's how.
Why Startups Pay Less
Nothing wrong with startups. I learned a ton. But they pay less because they have limited funding, they're betting on equity, and they're scaling fast.
I knew I was underpaid. But I was learning. So I stayed.
After 4 years, I was good. Really good. I could architect systems. I could mentor people. I could ship fast.
But my salary said I was a junior.
The Market Check
I got a message on LinkedIn. "We're hiring. Interested?"
Big tech company. I was curious.
I applied. Got through interviews. Got an offer: ₹18 LPA.
That's 50% bump. Seemed good. But something felt off.
I had 4 years of experience. I'd built systems from scratch. I'd managed small teams.
₹18 LPA felt like early-career pay.
How I Got to ₹35 LPA
Step 1: I did research
levels.fyi showed me the range for my level: ₹28-42 LPA.
I was getting the absolute bottom.
Step 2: I didn't accept immediately
I said "Let me think about it."
By Tuesday, the recruiter had emailed twice.
Step 3: I made the ask
I called (not emailed). I said:
"I'm really excited about the role. My research shows the range for this level is ₹28-42 LPA. I have 4 years of experience and shipped multiple systems. Could we discuss ₹32-35 LPA?"
Notice: I didn't say "Your offer is too low." I just stated facts.
Step 4: Handled pushback
They said: "The offer is competitive and based on your interview performance."
Translation: We gave you the bottom number.
I said: "I appreciate that. I've done research and I'm seeing ₹28-42 for this level. Given my 4 years of shipping experience, would you be able to come to ₹32 LPA?"
Step 5: I had leverage
This is key: I was currently employed. I didn't need the job.
I said: "I'm not in a rush. I'm happy at my current company. I'm just exploring opportunities."
This is true and it matters. If they think you're desperate, they won't move.
Step 6: I waited
They said "Let me get back to you."
I didn't follow up for 5 days.
Day 6, they called: "We can do ₹28 LPA."
I said: "I appreciate the move. Can you get to ₹30-32 LPA?"
Step 7: The big ask
2 days later: "We can do ₹35 LPA if you start sooner."
I said yes.
The Secret Sauce
- I researched the market
- I didn't show I was desperate
- I didn't negotiate hard - just asked questions
- I waited between responses
- I had legitimate leverage
Companies expect negotiation. If you accept the first offer, they wonder why.
The Math
- Startup salary: ₹12 LPA
- Initial offer: ₹18 LPA
- Final salary: ₹35 LPA
That's nearly 3x.
Over a 5-year career, that's ₹115 LPA more.
All from negotiating for 2 hours.
That's ₹57.5 LPA per hour of work.
